1. Write Your Own Vows
Personal vows are the single most impactful way to make your ceremony uniquely yours. They do not have to be long or perfectly polished. The most moving vows we have witnessed were honest, specific, and sometimes funny. Write about what you love, what you promise, and what your life together means to you.
Tips for writing vows:
- Set a word limit so both sets of vows are roughly the same length
- Practice reading them aloud at least three times before the wedding
- Bring a printed copy in case nerves take over
2. Incorporate a Unity Ritual
Unity rituals symbolize the joining of two lives and can be adapted to reflect your personalities:
- Wine blending ā perfect for wine-country weddings in the Willamette Valley, where each partner pours a different wine into a shared vessel
- Tree planting ā plant a sapling together and watch it grow alongside your marriage

As photographers, we cannot stress this enough: an unplugged ceremony produces dramatically better photos. Your guests’ full attention also makes the moment more emotionally powerful for everyone.

Many modern couples choose to walk down the aisle together rather than having one partner “given away.” This symbolizes entering the marriage as equal partners and can feel more authentic for couples who have been together for years or who want to break from tradition.
9. Include Your Pets
Portland is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the country, and we have photographed countless ceremonies featuring beloved pets. Your dog can be the ring bearer, walk down the aisle with you, or simply sit with a trusted friend in the front row. Just make sure someone is designated to handle your pet so you can focus on each other.

The ceremony exit sets the tone for the celebration to follow. Popular options include:
