By the time I show up to photograph your wedding or quinceanera, I already know exactly what you want. That is not because I am a mind reader. It is because we have had a thorough consultation where I listened carefully, asked the right questions, and built a detailed plan together. The client consultation is one of the most important parts of my process, and today I want to show you exactly what it looks like.
The Initial Inquiry
Everything starts with that first message. Whether you find me through social media, a referral, or my website, your inquiry kicks off a process that I have refined over years of experience. I respond to every inquiry within 24 hours, usually much sooner. In my initial response, I ask a few basic questions: the event date, the venue, the approximate guest count, and what type of coverage you are looking for. This helps me determine availability and give you a ballpark idea of pricing before we invest time in a full consultation.
If the date works and the budget aligns, we schedule a consultation. I offer these in person at a coffee shop or my studio, or virtually over video call for clients who prefer the convenience of meeting from home. Both formats work equally well.
Getting to Know You
The consultation itself typically lasts about an hour, and the first part is all about getting to know you as a couple or as a family. I want to understand your story, your personalities, and your vision for the event. Are you having a big traditional wedding or an intimate elopement? Is your quince a grand ballroom celebration or a backyard gathering with close family? These details shape everything from my shooting style to the equipment I bring.
I also ask about your relationship with the camera. Some people love being photographed and are natural in front of a lens. Others feel awkward and need a little extra guidance. Knowing this in advance helps me adapt my approach on the day of the event. For camera-shy clients, I might focus more on candid, documentary-style coverage. For couples who love the spotlight, we might plan more elaborate posed portraits.
Reviewing My Portfolio
During the consultation, I show you recent work from events similar to yours. If you are having a church ceremony followed by a reception at a banquet hall, I pull up galleries from similar events so you can see exactly what to expect. This is also when we discuss editing style. My signature look is warm, clean, and timeless, but I can adjust within that range based on your preferences. Some couples want more dramatic, moody tones. Others want bright, airy images. We look at examples together and find the sweet spot.
Building the Shot List
One of the most valuable parts of the consultation is building a customized shot list. Every family is different, and I want to make sure we capture every combination and moment that matters to you. We go through the family groupings for formal portraits: who absolutely must be in a photo together, which friends deserve their own group shot, and any special relationships or moments you want highlighted.
Beyond formals, we discuss the moments that are most important to you. Maybe your grandmother is making a toast and you want close-up shots of her expression. Maybe the groom’s mother is doing a surprise dance and you want video of the whole thing. These details would be easy to miss without advance planning, and the consultation ensures nothing falls through the cracks.
Timeline Planning
Photography does not exist in a vacuum. It needs to work within the overall event timeline. During the consultation, I review your timeline and offer suggestions based on my experience. Common recommendations include allowing 15 to 20 minutes for family formals so nobody feels rushed, scheduling couple portraits during golden hour for the best natural light, building in a buffer between the ceremony and reception for travel and photos, and keeping the first look private for maximum emotional impact.
I also coordinate with your other vendors. If you have a wedding planner, DJ, or videographer, I want to connect with them before the event to make sure we are all on the same page. Vendor coordination prevents conflicts and ensures the day flows smoothly.
Packages and Pricing
With a clear picture of what you need, I present my packages and we customize a plan that fits your budget and priorities. I believe in transparent, straightforward pricing with no hidden fees. Every package includes a clear deliverable: how many hours of coverage, how many edited images, whether prints or albums are included, and delivery timelines. I walk you through each option and answer every question until you feel completely comfortable with your choice.
After the Consultation
Following our meeting, I send a detailed summary email that includes everything we discussed, a formal quote, and a contract for review. I give you time to think it over and discuss with your partner or family. There is never any pressure to commit on the spot. When you are ready, we sign the contract, secure the date with a retainer, and your event is officially on my calendar.
From that point forward, I am available for questions, updates, and any changes to the plan. Many clients reach out multiple times before their event, and I welcome every message. This is your day, and my job is to make sure the photography experience is stress-free from start to finish.
