The Complete Wedding Day Emergency Kit Checklist Every Couple Needs

By MZMarch 5, 20263 min read

No matter how carefully you plan, unexpected moments happen on wedding days. A button pops off. A headache strikes during photos. Someone spills red wine on the tablecloth. The difference between a minor hiccup and a full-blown crisis often comes down to one thing: a well-stocked emergency kit. After photographing hundreds of Portland weddings, the MZ Photography team has seen it all, and we know exactly what you need to be prepared.

The Essentials: Non-Negotiable Items

These are the items that get used at nearly every wedding we photograph. Pack these first.

  • Safety pins — multiple sizes for wardrobe malfunctions, boutonniere fixes, and bustle emergencies
  • Sewing kit — needle, thread in white, black, and a color matching your attire, plus small scissors
  • Double-sided fashion tape — the hero product for necklines, hems, and any fabric that will not cooperate
  • Stain remover pen — for food, makeup, and grass stains on white fabric
  • Pain relievers — ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and antacids. Nerves and excitement can bring on headaches and upset stomachs.
  • Band-aids and blister pads — new shoes plus hours of dancing equals blisters. Moleskin patches are even better.
  • Tissues — for happy tears during vows, and there will be happy tears

Beauty and Grooming Fixes

Touch-ups throughout the day keep you looking fresh in photos from morning prep through the last dance.

  • Oil blotting sheets — Portland summers can be warm, and shine shows in photos
  • Setting spray — a quick mist refreshes makeup without redoing everything
  • Bobby pins and hair ties — hairstyles shift over the course of a long day
  • Compact mirror — for quick checks between events
  • Lip color — whatever shade you wore for the ceremony, pack it for reapplication
  • Deodorant — especially important for summer outdoor weddings
  • Breath mints or spray — you will be talking, kissing, and smiling at close range all day
  • Clear nail polish — stops stocking runs and can temporarily secure a loose button

Comfort and Practical Items

  • Comfortable backup shoes — flats or sandals for when your heels become unbearable. Many couples bring flip-flops for the dance floor.
  • Snacks — granola bars, nuts, crackers, and candy. You will be too busy to eat a full meal during cocktail hour, and low blood sugar can ruin your energy.
  • Water bottles — stay hydrated, especially at outdoor Portland venues in summer
  • Phone charger — a portable battery pack keeps your phone alive for last-minute coordination
  • Umbrella — this is Portland. Always have an umbrella. A clear one looks elegant in photos.
  • Bug spray — for garden and outdoor ceremonies near water
  • Sunscreen — sunburn during an outdoor ceremony shows up painfully in photos

Wardrobe Repair Tools

  • Hem tape — iron-on or adhesive for quick hem fixes
  • Lint roller — essential for dark suits and any fabric that attracts pet hair
  • Static guard spray — prevents fabric cling, especially in dry indoor venues
  • Shoe shine wipe — scuffs happen during setup and outdoor photos
  • Extra cufflinks, tie clip, or jewelry clasps — small accessories are easy to lose

Ceremony and Reception Supplies

  • Printed copies of vows — even if you have them memorized, bring a backup
  • Extra copies of the timeline — for vendors who arrive without theirs
  • Cash and tips — in labeled envelopes for each vendor, ready to distribute at the end of the night
  • Cake-cutting set — if your venue does not provide one
  • Bluetooth speaker — a small one for getting-ready music and any gaps between sound setups

How to Organize Your Kit

Pack everything in a clear, zippered bag or small toolbox so items are easy to find quickly. Assign the kit to your maid of honor, best man, or wedding coordinator so it is always nearby but not your responsibility on the big day.

We recommend packing the kit a week before the wedding and doing a final check the night before. Running out for last-minute items on the morning of is the opposite of relaxing.

Portland-Specific Additions

  • Rain poncho — lightweight and disposable, for unexpected showers during outdoor portions
  • Hand warmers — for fall and winter weddings at outdoor venues
  • Allergy medication — Portland’s beautiful gardens come with pollen, especially in spring
