Why Every Event Photographer Should Own a GoPro
The GoPro HERO12 Black might seem like an odd addition to a professional photographer’s kit. It is tiny, it has a fixed wide-angle lens, and its sensor is a fraction of the size of a full-frame camera. But this little action camera captures perspectives and moments that no other piece of equipment in your bag can replicate.
We have been incorporating GoPro footage and stills into our wedding and quinceaƱera coverage for the past two years, and the response from clients has been overwhelmingly positive. Here is how we use it and why you should consider adding one to your gear.
Time-Lapse Coverage of the Full Day
One of the most impactful ways to use a GoPro at a wedding is setting it up early and letting it run a time-lapse of the entire venue setup, ceremony, and reception. Mount it high in a corner overlooking the ceremony space and let it capture everything from the empty room being decorated through the last dance.
The HERO12 excels at this because of its incredible battery life in time-lapse mode. Set it to capture one frame every five seconds and you can get several hours of coverage from a single battery charge. The resulting video, compressed into 30 to 60 seconds, shows the full arc of the event in a way that no other format can.
Clients share these time-lapses on social media more than almost any other deliverable we provide. There is something magical about watching an empty ballroom transform into a celebration and then fill with people.
Unique Angles During Key Moments
The GoPro’s small size lets you place it in spots where a full-size camera simply cannot go. Here are some of our favorite placements:
On the officiant’s podium. Mount the GoPro facing the couple during the ceremony. This captures their expressions, the ring exchange, and the first kiss from a perspective that your main cameras miss because you are shooting from the audience side.
On the dance floor. Place the GoPro on the floor in the center of the dance floor with the ultra-wide angle pointed up. The resulting footage during group dancing is energetic, immersive, and completely unlike anything a handheld camera produces.
Attached to the bouquet. With a small adhesive mount, you can attach the GoPro to the bouquet toss and capture the toss from the bouquet’s perspective. This is a fun, shareable piece of content that always gets laughs.
Under the cake table. A low angle looking up at the cake cutting provides a dramatic perspective that emphasizes the height of elaborate tiered cakes.
HyperSmooth Stabilization for Walk-Throughs
The HERO12’s HyperSmooth 6.0 stabilization is genuinely impressive. You can walk through a venue holding the GoPro and the footage looks smooth enough to be professional. We use this for venue walk-throughs that get edited into the final wedding film, showing the space and decorations in a flowing, cinematic way.
The 360-degree horizon lock feature means you can even jog or move quickly without the footage becoming unwatchable. This is perfect for following the couple during an exit or walking through a crowded reception.
Underwater and Weather-Resistant Shots
Pool parties, beach receptions, and rain are all situations where you would never risk your $4,000 mirrorless camera. The GoPro is waterproof to 33 feet without a housing. We have used it for underwater engagement sessions at pools, rain portraits during unexpected downpours, and beach quinceaƱera celebrations where sand and surf would destroy other cameras.
The peace of mind of having a camera you can dunk in the ocean or shoot in a rainstorm without worry is invaluable at outdoor events.
Photo Booth Alternative
Set the GoPro on a tripod with a remote trigger and you have an instant informal photo booth. The ultra-wide lens captures large groups without anyone getting cut off, and the image quality is good enough for social media sharing. Add a ring light and a fun backdrop, and guests will line up to take group selfies.
This works especially well as a secondary photo station during cocktail hour while you are shooting formal portraits with the couple and family.
Technical Settings for Event Use
For video, I shoot at 4K 30fps with the standard color profile for quick turnaround. HyperSmooth set to Auto Lock gives the smoothest results for handheld use. Use the wide lens setting for immersive perspectives and the linear setting when you want to minimize the fisheye distortion for more natural-looking footage.
For time-lapse, 4K resolution at one frame every five to ten seconds balances quality with battery life. Always use a micro SD card rated for at least V30 speeds. The HERO12 generates large files, and a slow card will cause dropped frames.
For stills, the 27-megapixel sensor produces surprisingly detailed images, especially in good light. RAW photo capture gives you editing flexibility, though the small sensor means high-ISO performance drops off significantly. Keep the GoPro for outdoor or well-lit scenarios.
Mounting Solutions
GoPro’s ecosystem of mounts is one of its greatest strengths. The adhesive mounts stick to smooth surfaces and hold securely. The magnetic mount works on metal structures. A mini tripod with a GoPro adapter gives you a stable tabletop setup. And the chest or head mount, while not appropriate during a ceremony, can produce fun first-person perspective content during dance parties.
We keep a small pouch with six different GoPro mounts in our kit. The total weight is less than half a pound, and the creative options they open up are worth far more than the minimal space they take.
Integrating GoPro Content into Your Deliverables
GoPro footage should complement your primary camera work, not replace it. We use GoPro clips as transition shots in wedding films, as social media teasers, and as bonus content in online galleries. Clients see it as added value because it provides perspectives they were not expecting.
Color grading GoPro footage to match your main cameras takes some work. The small sensor handles color differently, and the wide-angle lens can introduce color fringing in high-contrast scenes. Develop a LUT or preset specifically for your GoPro workflow to streamline the editing process.
